Tales from the Tour – 2012 ADT Johor Masters

This week brings us the second event of the ADT season here in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. For anyone who isn’t familiar with the geography, JB is the southernmost point of Malaysia and just a hop across the river from Singapore. The easiest way to get to this town would be to fly into Singapore and drive across as it would take approximately 45 minutes. However, I decided to fly into Kuala Lumpur and make the three hour drive down with a couple friends. Since arriving here on Monday, its been a very interesting couple of days. Everything from wandering around town looking for a hotel to getting lost and ending up in Singapore. Apparently, a couple wrong turns in this town will send you across the bridge into Singaporean immigration.

After arriving late yesterday, today was the first time I got a look at the course. One of the things I immediately notice is the numerous elevation changes throughout the course which means that calculating yardage will be that much more important. The greens are not big here so hitting the center will give a decent chance at making the putt. par 3 16th With the first round starting tomorrow, my plan of attack is to fire at the middle of these greens and trust my putting from there. Game time starts at 7:50am which should allow for calm conditions.

Now a couple behind the scene pictures…

Closet in our hotel room. My friend sporting Golf Junkie on the left and my Fenix gear which are the five on the right.

Angry Birds inserted into our yardage guide. Pretty unique.

Instrument for gauging lightning used by the referee this week. Caught this during our weather delay.

2012 Asian Tour Qualifying School

Tomorrow it begins. The first round of this year’s Qualifying school to determine status on the Asian Tour and Asian Development Tour is set to begin on four different courses. Springfield GC, Imperial Lakeview, Majestic GC, and Banyan GC. Although Q-School is always a brutal week for any golfer, I am looking forward to the challenge and the beginning of the season. Down time

Many people may wonder what professional golfers do to prepare for a golf tournament while away from the course. Some like to putt in their rooms at night and some may go through their yardage book for a course plan. And then you got those who mark their golf balls.

Note for non golfers: putting an identifying mark with a pen on a golf ball helps to identify it quickly and reduces the risk of hitting the wrong ball.

Today, I bring you a quick profile of my friend Nick Pugh (follow) with one of his pre-game specialties. A fellow Asian Developmental Tour Player who I’ve had the great pleasure of rooming with, Nick’s preparation is what we all strive for. While in our room a couple days ago, this is what his creation resulted in…

Notice the variety of Sharpie colors along with the exquisite writing on the ball. Truly one of a kind!
